Automotive review site, Edmunds, recently tested the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning range and efficiency compared to its rival, the Rivian R1T. Other than the pricey GMC Hummer EV, these two are the only two fully electric pickup trucks available in the U.S., so they are being compared quite extensively.

The F-150 Lightning certainly looks and drives very much like an F-150, which also happens to be Edmunds’ Top Rated Truck. So exactly what kind of range can you really expect to see in an F-150 Lightning?

This is where Edmunds and their testing comes into play.

In the publication’s test, they figured out the real world range of the Ford F-150 Lightning. Edmunds used the range-topping Platinum model, which has the larger extended range battery pack (131 kWh). According to the EPA, this specific model has 300 miles of range, returns 66 MPGe, and uses 51 kWh to travel 100 miles.

We were seriously focused on raising the bar on this truck, including after we revealed it, so we can deliver more for our customers,” said Dapo Adewusi, F-150’s Lightning vehicle engineering manager. “And our drive for continuous improvement will get a big boost when we start getting feedback and ideas from customers when they receive their Lightning’s.”

Not only does the larger battery pack come with a wide range of benefits, it also determines the output of your Lightning. The standard-pack trucks produce 452 horsepower and a massive 775 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty amazing. The Lightning’s extended-range battery pack bumps peak output to 580 hp. That sort of power increased the Platinum test truck to 60 mph in four seconds flat.

Edmunds
tests every new electric vehicle on the same real-world driving loop to get a better idea of how far it can travel from a full charge down to zero miles remaining. The Lightning’s 332-mile performance outdid both of the Launch Edition Rivian R1T’s that they have tested – the first at 317 miles on 21-inch wheels and the second at 323 miles on its 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires.

In the end, it was the Ford F-150 Lightning that took down its rival.
